Honest Jons fifth offering in their series of vintage recordings from the EMI Archive in Hayes, this album uncovers the dizzy beginnings of the golden age of African music zinging with the social and political ferment of the independence movement and anti-colonianalism, after the Second World War and the daredevil origins of Congolese rumba, the entire continent's most popular music in the sixties and seventies. It's as if the musicians, fired up by the times in their zeal for experimental self-expression, tossed into a bottle some new elements and some old, some from near and some far, and then shook it hard, to see what would happen. With notes by Gary Stewart, author of Rumba On The River; translations and rare photographs; sound restoration at Abbey Road.

The new album from Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars was recorded in New York City and produced by Victor Axelrod, aka Ticklah, a founding member of Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra and the Easy Star All Stars.Ticklah also recorded and performed with Amy Winehouse on her GRAMMY-winning Back to Black album. Radio Salone has a decidedly retro approach. Recorded entirely on vintage analog gear, the album is reminiscent of the classic funky 70s African sound popular with vinyl collectors and reissue labels. Having persevered through the horrors of the Sierra Leonean civil war, band leader Reuben Koroma and the group continue to musically evolve in exciting ways, well past their jam sessions in the Guinean refugee camps and the rawness of their first recordings in their native capital of Freetown. The songs are infused with intricate dub elements not found in their earlier material and interludes are featured as part of the album flow for the first time. While the band initially gained fame through the power of their story and message, Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars have since become one of Africa's most active touring bands, and the years of experience are reflected in the virtuosity of their performance on Radio Salone. The likes of Paul McCartney, Keith Richards, Joe Perry, Ice Cube and Angelina Jolie have sung their praises.

Although it might at least in part be attributable to rough, sometimes imprecise recording techniques, there's a genuinely thrilling rawness to numbers like Deiyo Deiyo by The Hykkers, who appear to be channelling the earthiest psychedelia on offer at the time. Other examples of this compilation's more psychedelic leanings are less abrasive–The Black Mirrors' The World Ends, from which the album takes its title, is perhaps helped (to Western ears) by an English-language (and English-sounding) vocal as well as some catchy, Doors-y organ. More prominent still is the influence of James Brown and his primary characteristics–the urgent, repeated commands and catchphrases on the mic; the elasticated groove heaven laid down by the musicians. Not that the Nigerian pioneers were slavish imitators–something like The Mebusas' Mr Bull Dog bears the hallmarks of the Godfather of Soul, but filtered through a grounding in highlife.

The World Ends is the latest title from Soundway Records showcasing a wave of guitar driven and psychedelic groups that sprung up in Nigeria during the early 1970s. Featuring 32 electrifying and funk laden grooves, this is the sound of a generation attempting to pick up the pieces after the devastation of the Nigerian civil war.

The pair’s new LP has been greatly anticipated, yet Folila is a curious beast, a three-in-one project whose peculiar history has almost left it overburdened by a diverse array of guest collaborators. According to producer/manager Marc-Antoine Moreau, the singers originally planned two albums: the first a crossover disc, recorded in New York with friends gained on the festival circuit, the second a back-to-basics unplugged set, recorded in Mali. Instead, we have ended up with the New York guest sessions reworked in Mali, along with some ill-fitting numbers voiced there by controversial singer Bertrand Cantat. Darlings of the world music scene, Amadou & Mariam are greatly loved for their willingness to experiment, and for the musical craftwork that has hallmarked their take on West African blues.
