Steeped in the ancient tradition of the Bauls, the wandering spiritual musicians of Bengal, 'Music of the Honey Gatherers' is a beautiful and varied collection of stripped back and powerful trance-inducing Baul songs, imbued with the itinerant flavour of life on the road. This CD coincides with the release of the book entitled 'The Honey Gatherers' by Mimlu Sen. The book is an autobiographical account of Sen's journey with Paban Das Baul deep into the heart of Bengal, the rural hinterland behind Calcutta where few tourists ever go. In this fascinating and unusual book, she describes how they make their way across country, from shanty town to village, from monastery to festival, perched on the roofs of buses and squeezed inside trains, encountering tantrics and sages, exorcisms and witch sightings, catfish that climb trees and esoteric secrets - and fall in love. A European wide tour is planned to coincide with the release of the album, which was the culmination of many years work, imbued with the itinerant flavour of life on the road. The result is a collection of beautiful songs from the wandering Baul singers from the very eastern end of the Indo-Gangetic plains of India - an album which marks the return to his folk origins and Baul musical culture, lovingly produced and arranged by Paban himself to create an emotional, varied and intensely spiritual collection of songs. Paban Das Baul has gained worldwide recognition for his trance-inspiring, and energetic performances.
